Many high school students play sports – both girls and boys, those that are good start to think they could play their sport at college level. It’s not that easy. The truth is that most high school athletes wont get the opportunity to play. Have you ever stopped to consider what the chances are of earning a scholarship to play college baseball , basketball or even football ? Not only must you be tops in your sport but you also need to be a good student because your grades and test scores are vital to your chances of landing a scholarship.
Turning professional is often the biggest advancement that an aspiring athlete can make in his or her career. They often begin to compete immediately, although some may spend more time on the bench (as a reserve) to gain experience. In some sports, such as baseball, athletes may begin their professional career on a minor league team before moving up to the major leagues. Professional athletes generally advance in their sport by displaying superior performance and receiving accolades, and in turn they earn a higher salary. Others may receive endorsements from companies and brands.
Ninety years ago, bicycle racers were carrying little “atom bottles” in their back pockets, which contained mixtures of caffeine and alcohol. It was to be swallowed late in the race, to “open your eyes.” Edward Borysewicz, known to all as Eddie B, who coached the . Olympic cyclists in the late seventies and early eighties, with great success, extolled the value of atom bottles, along with horse meat. I followed most of Eddie B’s advice in the eighties, including his contemptuous dismissal of hard-shell helmets, but never swallowed the contents of an atom bottle.
