2. Antitussive: Temaril-P has been found to be effective therapy and adjunctive therapy in various cough conditions of dogs. Therefore, in addition to its antipruritic action, Temaril-P is recommended for the treatment of “kennel cough” or tracheobronchitis, bronchitis including all allergic bronchitis, and infections and coughs of nonspecific origin. (Coughs due to cardiac insufficiencies would not be expected to respond to Temaril-P therapy.) As with any antitussive treatment, the etiology of the cough should be determined and eliminated if possible. Otherwise, symptoms are likely to recur following discontinuance of therapy.

Treatment: If a pancreatic or liver tumor is identified and able to be surgically excised, the skin lesions may normalize for an extended period of time, but because these tumors metastasize (spread to other areas of the body) quickly, surgery is not curative. In cases of end stage liver disease, surgery is not possible, and the goal of therapy is to increase quality of life and decrease uncomfortable skin lesions with supportive care and addressing the nutritional abnormalities. Supportive care includes supplementing protein and necessary minerals and enzymes through the diet and oral supplements or by weekly intravenous amino acid infusions that are performed in the hospital on an outpatient basis until improvement in the skin is noted. Unfortunately, despite the supportive care, the disease will progress.

As with most potentially serious conditions a complete evaluation should include a complete urinalysis to check for urinary tract infections and clues to possible causes of the vacuolar liver disease. Your veterinarian may then recommend imaging the liver itself via radiographs ( X-Rays ) and/or ultrasound. But again, ultimately, the definitive diagnosis will require a biopsy.  The biopsy is also valuable  to diagnose  or exclude other types of liver disease that might behave more aggressively. Also remember that your veterinarian may still need to pursue more testing to determine if/what underlying disease process may also be involved with VH.
